The Untrained Eye (1990) at Side Gallery celebrated the work of self taught working class photographers Albert Smith, Mary Gillies, Laurie Worsley and Jimmy Forsyth, whose images of everyday life in the North East offered an unfiltered, intimate record of their communities, valuing instinct, empathy and lived experience over formal technique.
